Wacky Wednesday--Marijuana should be decriminalized

Note: Before reading the following arguments, please understand that they are not what I believe. On Wednesdays, I deliberately argue for wrong ideas, challenging my listeners to call and defend the obvious right answer, which is usually far harder than one would expect. This is a summary of what Wacky Andrew will be arguing, not a representation of what real Andrew believes.

~The Bible doesn’t mention it, let alone prohibit it.
~It’s far more similar to tobacco/nicotine or alcohol than to heroin or methamphetamines.
~It has medical benefits.
~People spend money on it, why not tax it and get a share?
~Nobody ever died of a marijuana overdose.
~People should be allowed to live their lives as they see fit.
~Where in the Constitution do you see the power to regulate drugs?
~Many religions use drugs to help achieve transcendent states.
~Cops, courts, and jails could be used for more important things.

One reason marijuana is so dangerous is because it is, on the surface, so harmless. Most people end up calming down, laughing a lot, openning up socially, eating a bunch, and just enjoyin themselves and all usually within the confines of their own homes. Pretty harmless huh? Yeah but...People get lulled into thinking it's so harmless that they do it thinking there are no consequences. It actually gives them license to do more of it, more often. If it was as addicting and as readily and quickly inflicted health concerns as does heroine or crystal meth, then people would be more afraid of it. There are potential health concerns and addictive qualities to it. Not to mention, when used real frequently it takes the place of doing other important things: learning, being part of society, trying new things, and so on. It's the frog in the slow-to-boil water: feels fine until before you know it, you're frog-soup.-BA
