Wacky Wednesday--Christians Shouldn’t Listen To Rock/Secular Music

Note: Before reading the following arguments, please understand that they are not what I believe. On Wednesdays, I deliberately argue for wrong ideas, challenging my listeners to call and defend the obvious right answer, which is usually far harder than one would expect. This is a summary of what Wacky Andrew will be arguing, not a representation of what real Andrew believes.

~Rock and roll emphasizes everything Christians stand against: immoral sex, rebellion against authority, drugs, and anti-social behavior in general.
~It destroys the musical imagination.
~Certain rhythms contribute to barbaric impulses.
~Can you imagine a strip club playing Vivaldi?
~Rock music is just Satanism in disguise.
~Is the rock lifestyle something Christians can be proud of?
~Offers a false sense of satisfaction in a way that does not last and erodes other senses.
~There is a physical reaction to most music. The reaction to rock music is to move around and even violently so.

Andrew, I called in and we had a good but always too brief discussion. But it got me thinking...

You could do much service by having a show with a topic along the lines of how we choose our activities, amusements, entertainment, even information sources in a Godly and Christian way.

This has been an important subject for me since I became a Christian 5 years ago. From giving up some music (just too ungodly) to giving up some TV shows (I *had* to finish the Sopranos last season, but I wouldn't start watching it if it were new now) to what movies I go see. I passed on '300', then watched it on HBO. My wife 'made' me see 'Superbad', and we were both embarassed by it. We went to see 'Sex and the City, and it was on the edge of wrong, and I had seen every episode on HBO, which was SO wrong. 'Mamma Mia', ont he other hand, is pretty close to OK for adults, and 'Hancock', which I loved, is pretty safe I think...

But my point is, a topic like this could help many Christians (and maybe some non-Christians) reconsider their choices by encouraging them to use a spiritual eye to look at their choices. While it is not what goes into us but what comes out of us, still what goes into us is powerful and has consequences. In a 'Paris Nicole Spears' culture, we should make our choices intentionally, do you agree?

Anyways, free show idea. Need not credit me - it's God's thing anyways. Love you Big Guy, keep on...

I think it's a great idea. Perhaps we'll do it for next Monday's Ethics question. You're right that it's a lot broader and it would be good to talk about the big picture, so to speak. Thanks for the excellent show topic suggestion. =)
