Wacky Wednesday--Apologetics Is a Mistake

Note: Before reading the following arguments, please understand that they are not what I believe. On Wednesdays, I deliberately argue for wrong ideas, challenging my listeners to call and defend the obvious right answer, which is usually far harder than one would expect. This is a summary of what Wacky Andrew will be arguing, not a representation of what real Andrew believes.

~Love doesn’t grow from a victorious debate.
~People hate to feel coerced and to be coerced.
~Reasoning is mental and verbal warfare. The goal is domination and submission by use of mental coercion.
~Reasoning isn’t free. Faith is free.
~It doesn’t work. How many people do you know who came to the faith by losing an argument?
~A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.
~When someone loses a debate, they just go home madder and come back better prepared next time. I know I always did.
~When did you ever lose a debate and think, “Golly, maybe I’m wrong.”
~At best, people become grudging converts, which is a far cry from passionate, grateful, enthusiastic disciples.
~God made this world with enough ambiguity that we aren’t forced to believe in Him. Who are you to coerce what God has refrained from forcing?
~The rules of logic aren’t Biblical, per se.
~If your belief is based on reasons, what do you do when better reasons come along?
~Arguing favors the best arguer far more than it favors the arguer with the truest position.
~Imagine the long-term consequences of successfully talking someone into marrying you who otherwise wouldn’t have done so!
~Apologetics makes it seem like the decision to believe and the decision to admit that God exists are really within the other person’s power to make.
