I'm confused because like you, I see God as being illogically generous with us. He's given everybody more than they deserve. But how does that reality fit with God being just? Because if He's giving out more than is deserved, then technically He's not just, right? How can God be considered as overall merciful and overall just at the same time? Are they not contradictory? My only guess is that of course there was a price to us getting the gift of salvation--Christ's innocent death. That satisfies the notion that God is just, while allowing us the merciful reception of the free gift of salvation. But that was a very unjust thing for Jesus to have to endure. I don't know. It gets very hard to "add up"--all this "bookkeeping" of justice. We deserved the death and sufferings of Christ. Instead he beared (sp?) that burden. What did He get in return? Our fellowship? As you've said before Andrew, I don't think that was worth it. But if He didn't get equal value for his sacrifice, then God is not just, right?
