3PM Malta legalizes divorce

Although this may not seem like good news, the heavily Catholic (95%) nation of Malta recently voted a non-binding resolution to legalize divorce. The reason it’s at least somewhat good news is that the ballot measure passed barely with a 53% majority. And just what wildly liberal divorce law did those 53% approve? Only after the welfare of any children has been adequately secured and a couple has been separated for four years…four years (!)…are they allowed to get a divorce. Although I despise divorce and generally oppose it except under the most rare of circumstances, if we are to have divorce, I at least admire the Maltans for recognizing that a significant waiting period is perfectly reasonable. Given the significance of marriage, requiring people to wait only makes sense. Assuming they follow through with an actual law based on the referendum, the only remaining country in the world not allowing divorce will be the Phillipines.
