In anticipation of her twins (a boy and a girl) being born soon, Mariah Carey is building a tremendously luxurious nursery, including walk-in closets, a gold-and-onyx couch worth $1 million, descending flat-screen TVs, and diamond-encrusted iPods for each child. According to this story, “It might seem over the top, but Mariah has waited a long time for her baby dreams to come true and she says the twins will be the most spoilt kids on the planet.” Now, I have no idea whether Mariah Carey will actually turn out to be a good parent (along with Nick Cannon) or not. But the early indications here are not good. Yet this notion of spoiling children really raises a concern all of us parents should take seriously. If God is loving and the best Parent there is. The real question we must at least periodically ask ourselves is whether we’re capable of depriving our children of things for their own good the way He deprives us of things for ours.
