As anyone who has tried to comprehend the New Testament knows, the world would be a lot simpler for us if there had been one single definitive Gospel of Jesus Christ rather than the four we do have in the canon (and the ones that were excluded for good reasons, like Thomas). There are tensions between the accounts, things that seem vital to one aren’t even mentioned in others, and above all for the modern American Christian, none of it is particularly chronological. So, why did the Gospels take between two and four decades (more for John) to appear, and why did there need to be more than just one of them?
