03/02/11 4PM Commentary

After years of a hard partying lifestyle, aging rocker Rod Stewart is now singing lounge style songs and, unexpectedly, playing with models. Not the kind with long blonde hair, but the kind that run on miniature railways. He has a massive layout of model trains both in his Essex home and his Beverly Hills mansion, and he even sets up mini-versions between shows when he’s on tour. He sometimes finds himself “focusing so intently on a model that it ceases to be fun.” This is a profound admission of what happens when we work too hard at anything, especially fun. But it’s also an interesting admission of (semi-?) addictive behavior, substituting this for his prior lifestyle. For my part, I also find the comparisons between collecting model women and their bodies and collecting perfectly formed and fitted trains and settings. Is the desire to collect objects manifested in both arenas? You decide. Whatever you conclude, you should know that Eric Clapton and Phil Collins are also fellow train set enthusiasts
