03/09/11 2PM Matt LeBlanc’s daughter focus

Matt LeBlanc, the actor who played Joey (the hunky but dopey and loveable philanderer in Friends) took five years off after the end of the spinoff show Joey ended because he had gone through a divorce and wanted to devote himself to his daughter. Now he doesn’t want to have any more because he’s so close to her and it might upset her. When asked what his current girlfriend thinks of that, he replied, “To be brutally frank, I don’t care. Relationships come and go. Children are forever.” It’s not likely obvious to all, but this is a truly amazing admission that he idolizes his daughter. She has him so invested in her that he won’t even have other children for fear of it upsetting her. And the real danger, of course, is what will happen if she ever rejects him, misbehaves terribly, or even suffers a tragedy? He’ll be devastated because he’s invested his entire self into her “being forever.” But children aren’t forever, and precisely those parents who put that kind of significance pressure on kids wind up almost forcing those kids to rebel or disappoint greatly. No human being, whether a parent, a spouse, or a child is capable of holding the weight only God can sustain. (Note: Sorry, the article isn't available online, so I don't have a link for you.)
