--There’s a tremendous promise of future society and prosperity in this command.
--One little weird item about the 10th Commandment is the inclusion in Deuteronomy 5 (but not Exodus 20) of a command to not covet your neighbor’s field.
--And it got me to thinking about how no one when this command was issued even owned a field yet because they were still in the desert.
--People who are just barely delivered from Egypt, camped out around Mount Sinai with whatever they can carry on their backs.
--And they don’t even know that soon they’ll fail a really big test and wander for 40 years in the desert so that only their children will inherit Canaan Israel.
--And WHEN that happens….
--You’re going to have so much that some of you are going to want what others have.
--You’ll have fields, servants, capital (livestock), homes, and families.
--And so you must remember when that comes about not to get caught up in the material prosperity of it all and be content with whatever you have, especially if it seems like less than your neighbor has.
--Remember what I delivered you from. And remember what you have right now.
--Remember how happy you and your parents were JUST to be free from tyranny!
--Was this written for Jews or for Americans?
