Ethics: Should Premarital Sex Be Illegal?

BYU’s promising basketball player has been sidelined for the remainder of the season because he broke the honor code when he had premarital sex with his girlfriend. Apart from causing a wave of complaints about privacy and the modern age, I think it raises a very interesting moral question. Just how bad is premarital sex, and is it bad enough that it should be against the law (as it is in the Bible)? Can you make the case for such a law on secular grounds? On religious grounds? Would our society be better off with such a law? (Were we better off when we had such laws?)
